Best Ways to Save on Groceries

save on groceriesEveryone is looking for a way to save on groceries. And why not?

After all, prices on everything from coffee to meat to vegetables continue to climb...

And your food dollar seems to get you less and less every time you go to the store.

Remember the good old days?

When you could go into the grocery store, spend $50, and walk out the front door with more than one bag?

Considering the average American family of four spends around $160 every week at the supermarket...

It is no wonder that people are looking for alternative ways to save on groceries every week.

You Need to Learn How to Save on Groceries...

Because food is taking a bigger chunk of your monthly budget. Why is this?

As hard as it may be to believe, corn is the major culprit for higher food prices across the board.

More American farmers are focusing on growing corn since the U.S. subsidizes corn to be used for energy-producing ethanol. And American farmers are also growing more corn for export.

As more countries continue to consume more meat, corn is rising in demand as a basic animal feed.

Therefore, more and more farmland is becoming dedicated to corn; which means that there is less farmland available for wheat.

This is also why the cost of flour, bread, and cereal rose by more than 10% since last year.

Farmers worldwide are also growing more corn -- and fewer fruits and vegetables. Hence, we have to import more and more fruits and vegetables.

Since so much U.S. produce now comes from overseas, the prices of produce in America have jumped about 14 percent as well.

And in addition to food, the packaging, processing, and shipping costs all rose due to high oil prices worldwide.

And even if the cost of oil declines, it's unlikely any of those savings will be passed along to you, the average grocery shopper.

Therefore, it is more critical than ever to learn how to save on groceries and stretch your food dollar...

And here are a few ideas on how to do that.

Save On Groceries- Some Simple Tips

By implementing just a few of the tips we show you below, you can begin to save on groceries every month.

Granted, you may already know a few of them; but there are also a few you may not.

Plus, use common sense before heading out to the supermarket. Don’t go shopping on an empty stomach (when everything looks good), and don’t be driving all over town when you can find most of your stuff at one store.

With that in mind...

Know Your Local Store

For most of your grocery needs, you local supermarket is just fine. They have a great selection, more often than not have competitive pricing, and will save you from driving all over.

But take the time to know how they work and when their specials are. Do they have double coupons on one certain day every week? Do they have a frequent shoppers program or the in-store discount card?

Do you know where the “quick sale” discounted meats and baked goods are located? Do they consistently have a one day a week where the pricing is particularly attractive on pork or poultry?

Do a little research and learn how your main supermarket works. That way, you can plan to take advantage of the specials that are unique to your individual store.

Plan First

This is a common sense thing as well; but something I never did until recently.

Take the time and do an inventory of your refrigerator and cupboards... And make a list.

Coordinate that list with any grocery coupons you have on hand; especially for those things you get all the time like condiments (ketchup, mayo, or salad dressing) or canned or frozen fruits and vegetables.

Coupons

You can save on groceries to the tune of hundreds of dollars a month by taking advantage of coupons and your local grocery discount cards.

Just by using a few coupons every time you shop can cut an average of 10 percent off your total food bill by using even just a couple of coupons per trip.

But your savings can really add up if you actually search out some online coupon sites and take advantage of other coupon opportunities.

And it is not just on food and cleaning products; some of these online sites offer discounts up to half off on stuff like airline tickets and electronics as well.

Think About Using the Store Brands As Well

Very often, store brands are the exact same product as the higher priced, more popular brands with the well known label.

These larger stores like Safeway and Kroger know that people are looking for alternatives to save on groceries; and the days of generic packaging and bland tasting store brands have long gone.

Store branding is a big money maker for these bigger supermarket chains; and they have to the taste and quality of the major brands to compete.

These bigger chains know that; and the store brands can often be the exact same product as the major labels; but at a third of the price.

Look High & Low

Here’s another thing many people don’t realize. There are some wholesalers that pay a premium to get their products placed at eye level of the average consumer; and they pass this premium along to you in the form of higher pricing.

Why not look at the top and bottom shelves instead. You will find the best deals on similar (if not the same) product on the higher or lower shelves.

Eliminate Those Impulse Buys

We’re all guilty of them... Those spontaneous trips to the market for a quick ice cream fix.

But the problem is that you rarely walk out of the store with just ice cream. Too often, you go in for one item, and walk out with two bags.

By sticking to a well thought out shopping list, and planning your meals in advance, you will eliminate a majority of impulse buys; especially of things that you really don’t need.

Can you still go on those impulse buying runs? Sure; but why not set a weekly dollar amount to budget for them so that you don’t get out of control.

Simply eliminating these impulse buys will make a significant difference in your weekly grocery bill.

Realize When You’re Being “Sold”

Every supermarket has their own “tricks of the trade”... And being aware of these tricks will save you from overpriced items and impulse spending.

The end of the aisle bins are a big trick, along with “island displays” and the guys offering free samples.

Again, stick with your list and avoid these higher priced items that are placed in these positions to draw you in and pay more for these items than you need to.

Check Out Your Checker

Too many people just trust their checker and the bar code scanner. This is a mistake.

Who cares about the latest celebrity scandal or the baby born with a mustache? Put down the magazine and watch the prices reflected in the scanner.

It is very easy to catch any pricing mistakes; and by keeping a copy of the store circular handy, you can easily point out the advertised price to your checker if you need to dispute a price.

And one other thing... Don’t be embarrassed if the checker has to go out into the store to verify a price.

Granted, it feels like you are holding up people in the line behind you... and some of them may get impatient.

But it is not your problem; it is the store’s. Hold your ground, and insure that you get the advertised price for your product.

If people in line behind you get impatient, they can always go to another line.
