Best Ways to Save on Gas

Everyone knows that gasoline prices have been high; and they don’t look like they are getting any lower.

At an average price of just around $3 per gallon, anyway you can save on gas means keeping money right in your pocket.

So how exactly do you save on gas?

There are a couple of different tips you can use that will increase the miles you are able to squeeze out of every gallon of gas...

And the better your miles per gallon, the more you will save on gas over the course of the month.

So let's find out how exactly you can increase your MPG...

Anyone Can Save On Gas Using These Tips

A lot of these gas saving tips you may have heard about before.

But have you ever actually used them?

By combining several of the tips into a complete monthly plan, anyone can save on gas... Not only on a monthly basis, but throughout the year as well.

So let’s get started and you’ll earn exactly what you can do to increase your miles per gallon and save on gas every month...

Save On Gas With Basic Auto Maintenance

Don't skimp on maintenance; we know this is common as car repairs or maintenance never come at a convenient time.

But by maintaining your car’s maintenance on a regular basis will save you from costly repairs down the line.

And the better your maintenance program, the more efficient your auto will run; which translates directly into improved miles per gallon.

Always follow the manufacturer-recommended maintenance. After all, your car is designed to run a certain way; and regular maintenance will keep it running at peak performance and will save on gas every month.

Also, check the air in the tires every few weeks and refill your tires to the car manufacturer's recommended pressure.

This is best done when the tires are cold (have not been driven on more than a mile or so); and it is normal for them to have a few psi higher pressure after extensive driving.

Also, when was the last time you had your auto tuned up?

A tune up is necessary every 50,000 miles to keep your spark plugs firing at maximum efficiency; and your engine’s computer needs to be checked by a professional mechanic using the latest diagnostic machines so the fuel/air mixture is correct and as efficient as possible.

A tune up is generally not very expensive, and since the average person drives around 12,000 to 15,000 miles per year, you can keep your car running at peak performance by simply getting a tune up every three or four years.

Save On Gas At the Pump

Learning how to fill up efficiently will also save on gas. Mainly this consists of filling your gas tank completely when you stop for fuel.

The more you try to save by adding $15 here and $20 there will be wasted by extra trips to the gas pump. And don’t top up your tank between fills.

It is wasted money and bad for the environment because it invariably forces liquid fuel into the evaporative emissions system, where it overwhelms circuits that are supposed to only route fuel tank vapors to the engine while it is running and can tank vapors can be burned.

Wait until you have a quarter tank; but don't push this any further. However, in cold weather, you run an increased risk of condensation in the fuel tank.

Running a car with less than a quarter tank can shorten the life of the electric fuel pump and running on close to empty will often damage or destroy the pump.

And don’t be partial to any particular brand. Shop around and find the best deal on gas since there usually is absolutely no difference between any of the regular brands.

It is a fact that all of the tankers for the various stations fill their tanker trucks at the nearest local refinery, and the only difference between Mobil or Shell or Conoco (for example) are a few gallons of an additive that each individual brand mixes with the fuel before shipping it to their local stations.

And since all of these gasoline additives must comply with regulatory and environmental standards, quite often the only difference between various brands of gasoline is their advertising.

Also, you can use fuel with the lowest required octane. Low-octane "regular" gas is usually all that is required for average cars.

The definition of octane is a rating of the individual fuel's resistance to engine-damaging pre-ignition ("knock") in high-performance vehicless.

Save on gas by using low octane gas since it is less expensive and a better value if that's all your engine requires.

Naturally, check your owner's manual to be sure. But unless you are driving a new Corvette or the latest autobahn tested German car you can probably get away by using Regular.

Also, not many people realize that engines need less octane at higher altitudes. If your engine does not "knock" using Regular, paying more for a higher octane gas is a waste since the increased octane makes no significant improvement to gas mileage and it is no better for your engine.

Save On Gas With Technology

With the prevalence of smart phones and the amazing amount of technology available to you, why not think about finding a gas app for your phone?

There are dozens of apps that help users find cheap gas both in your own neighborhood or while on a road trip.

GasBuddy.com offers one of the best apps for both iPhone and Android phones, with an easy to use interface and even estimated times and directions to the gas stations in your vicinity (wherever you happen to be).

You can search by zip code, city, or just tap the “Gas Near Me” button on your smart phone screen and you will be presented with the best gas prices in your immediate area.

And by selecting the “map view” on the app will give you the station locations right on your smart phone screen; and you can get driving directions as well.

Also, you can download another app for your phone that will help you avoid traffic. Google Maps comes pre-installed on a  majority of phones; and Google Maps is handy as it will show you road conditions at your current time in most major cities so you can navigate around the most congested areas.

This eliminates gas burning stop and go traffic, as well as sitting for minutes idling while waiting for traffic to loosen up.

Google maps uses color coded lines to show the traffic levels of the route you are thinking about taking; so forget about the yellow (fairly congested) and definitely avoid the red (major congestion) or red and black (stop and go traffic).

Save On Gas With These Other Options

Don’t forget to check the Internet to save on gas as well. Since most people do an online search before heading out to go shopping locally anyways, why not check around and see if you can find some great gas deals as well.

Some of these Internet sites will even offer text messaging options, so they will actually text you with the location of the cheapest gas in your immediate vicinity.

Since it only takes about 30 seconds to do, why not include a quick search to save on gas before you head out to shop locally.

A couple of good sites are MSN’s Auto site  along with GasPriceWatch.com as well.

Here’s another idea...Buy gas on Wednesday.

Gas prices are statistically the cheapest on Wednesdays, but this is only statistically true over a large number of days. It won't be true every week.

Also, think about filling up four to five days before major holidays. Gas prices almost always spike right before any major holiday.

Save On Gas By Actually Using These Tips

Anyone can save on gas by using these tips. But you actually have to put them into action.

Download those apps for your smart phone... do a quick online check before you go out shopping locally. Make sure that you do the regular maintenance on your car.

Get in the habit of implementing a couple of these tips every month.

You’ll see that anyone can save on gas by being a smarter consumer; and that money you save on gas can be applied directly to your monthly budget.
